SA: The Wiggles: educators and entertainers
A university study has found that Australia's top pop group for children, The Wiggles,
are doing more than just providing youngsters with a bit of entertainment.
It says The Wiggles are in fact doing an excellent job of educating kids about music
and dance concepts.
Adelaide University student JON OSBORNE has been examining the groups' work alongside
the views of long-held music education theorists.
He's found the Wiggles match up well with the theory that children best learn musical
concepts by hearing simple melodies with lots of repetition and by becoming involved themselves
with dance, hand clapping and feet tapping.
In his study MR OSBORNE analysed all eight Wiggles albums released since the group
formed in 1990 and also watched every Wiggles video.
He says it's hard to judge whether the current generation of young Australians will
grow up to be more musically aware thanks to the group, but says anything as popular as
they are has to have an effect somewhere down the track.
